You’ve done some soul searching, figured out what you want and where you want to go in 2020 and beyond, you’ve made all the well thought out, colour-coded plans, you’ve set calendar reminders – the works. Congratulations! You’re well on your way to making things happen this year. (If you still need some tips on proper planning for 2020, check out our last post on how to set quarterly goals HERE.) So, you’ve got the goals covered but… what about your mindset? We’re going to show you exactly how to match your mindset to your 2020 goals to make sure that you hit those milestones with ease.
Solid planning coupled with a shaky mindset will likely result in you spinning your wheels, but not getting super far. When things get tough, and they inevitably will, mindset is what will see you through and out the other side. This part of the equation is crucial.
Most of us fall into two categories of mindset from time to time: a growth or fixed mindset. Take a look below at the differences between the two. Discovering these differentiating factors can help you categorize where your mind is at.
If you have a fixed mindset, you believe that whatever skills or talents a person possesses – they are born with them. Along with that mentality, you feel like wherever you are now is pretty much where you’ll always be. You don’t see much room for change or envision anything different coming your way anytime soon.
When you come across something you don’t understand or immediately excel at it, you tend to avoid it. You think it’s clearly not for you. This mindset combined with entrepreneurship looks like a pretty routined and structured workday, client load, services, products, etc. Not much change is welcomed within this mindset and without change there can be no growth or evolution, beyond what happens naturally.
With a growth mindset, whatever issue or problem comes your way, it is figureoutable (thanks Marie Forleo). The key is you just need to work at it. Inside a growth mindset, when you come across something you aren’t familiar with or don’t already know, you see this as an exciting challenge. You’re presented with an opportunity to learn a new skill – this is where your inner fire ignites.
This mindset welcomes change and the infinite potential that comes with it. Fear rarely holds you back, but the unknown provides a thrill of a new experience.
When it comes to business ownership, an entrepreneur with a growth mindset refuses to feel limited in their every day. They welcome new experiences, interact with mentors or fellow business owners to absorb every tidbit they can to use to their advantage. Fear is often a sign that you’re operating outside of your comfort zone which means growth is just around the corner.
However, if you’re feeling in more of a fixed mindset right now, don’t panic – most of us display elements of both fixed and growth mindsets at some point in our journey. This is actually pretty common. The good news here is that thanks to neuroplasticity (aka brain plasticity), your brain has an innate ability to change and adapt after being exposed to new and different experiences.
Instead of having an I-have-it-all-figured-out attitude, get curious. We guarantee you’ll come away with increased insight or knowledge around how best to handle things.
Replace the word ‘failure’ with ‘lesson.’ Change ‘I can’t’ to ‘how can I?.’ These simple swaps help to rewire your brain and can make a huge difference. Try it!
Studies have shown that business owners with a purpose tend to have a growth mindset and therefore achieve greater levels of success – cultivate that feeling of having a greater purpose – you and your business can make a real difference in the lives of others.
The more unfamiliar the better. Seriously if you’ve been doing something the same way for a while now, switch it up – there are more than one ways to get something done and you never know, this new way might even bring about better results.
Compile a list of all the times you learned something new and it allowed you to level up in life or business – you’ll soon realise your potential for growth and change is bigger than you realise. Keep this list on your phone or post it on your desk in your office. Let it serve as a reminder for you daily.
We’ll even start it off for you – you mastered walking AND talking at a fairly young age, even after showing zero aptitude for it on your first few attempts! 😉
A growth mindset is the only mindset we start off with.
Speak positive words over yourself, your life and your business – you have endless ability to change and grow, the possibilities are endless, don’t forget that!
